Zion National Park in Utah is a heaven for hikers, filled with several trails for every level of experience and elevations that vary from 3,600-8,700 feet. The paths are full of historic details and now you can bring new adventures to the area as you hike Angels Landing, The Narrows, and more.

Angels Landing

A popular trail at Zion National Park, Angels Landing offers a day full of adventure if you are a seasoned hiker who has no issues with heights. It is moderate in difficulty and takes just over 2 hours at about 4.4 miles round-trip.

Starting at The Grotto trailhead, which is close by Zion Lodge, Angels Landing is a busy route that becomes uneven after hikers pass Scout Lookout. Use the chains bolted into the rock as you move along the path and watch out for slippery rocks, particularly if the conditions are wet or icy. Wear shoes that are good in water for your safety as you ascend to the magnificent Angels Landing summit along the narrow ridge.

Angels Landing

As you can imagine, this trail is adult-oriented and not recommended for kids. While the terrain is rough, the experience is amazing as it offers great scenery photography opportunities of the Virgin Waters. You also pass through a wooded area, reach an impressive cleft at the opening of Refrigerator Canyon, and see breathtaking vertical red sandstone walls.

The Narrows

Within Zion National Park is The Narrows, a part of canyon slightly north of Zion Canyon. Impressively, it is in the top 5 of National Geographic’s America’s Best 100 Adventures. Much of the hike is in the Virgin River that is on the Colorado Plateau, as trekkers go from one canyon wall to the other. In the summertime, the water is refreshing. However, a hike in the water, as expected, is a vigorous one; be cautious as the canyon is winding, and there have been flash floods that can come on without warning.

Some people hike The Narrows from the bottom at a casual pace until the point they stop feeling comfortable; this is particularly true for first-time river trekkers. In summer, it is a moderate hike and fine for kids over 4 feet tall. It takes between 2 and 3 hours, depending on your pace and how far you go through the part known as Wall Street. For more advanced hikers, try the top-down approach of the 16-mile hike that takes up to 14 hours to complete.

Within Zion National Park there are plenty more fantastic trails, including The Subway, Observation Point, and Lady Mountain. The Subway is a half-day demanding hike that leads advanced hikers to dinosaur tracks, a gorge called the subway, and a huge waterfall called Keyhole Falls. Or take a hike up to Zion National Park’s highest point called Observation Point to see the primary Zion canyon in all its glory.

Lady Mountain is a high difficulty hike up the park’s southern peak that leads you up to where you can see over the majestic Emerald Pools. With so much hiking to be done at Zion National Park, including Angels Landing, The Narrows and other trails, it is no wonder it is such a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Have you been to Zion National Park? If so, what was your experience with there?
